Ecovillage Research Review

Most relevant academic papers offer insights into prior studies of ecovillages, but there are none that offer a complete overview. This review is meant to contribute to filling that gap.Research about intentional communities is usually concerned with the social aspects of communities, how groups arise and remain together, what roles social bonds and commitments play, and how identity is created. The most common topic was the construction of the vision and mission—that is, the goals, intentions, and ideals being pursued—of each community. Other recurring themes included the evaluation of how well these communities have accomplished their goals and the potential for transferability to other social contexts.
