[148] 5. Oktober [1907]. Mit den Drachen- und Ballonaufstiegen sammeln wir Erfahrungen, die auf einer etwaigen Südpolarexpedition unbedingt benutzt werden müßten. Die 100 Gasflaschen waren sehr glücklich gewählt. Wenn es gelingen sollte, auch für Winteraufstiege brauchbares Ballonmaterial zu beschaffen, so sind sie vielleicht etwas knapp. Immerhin ist die Mitnahme einer größeren Zahl kaum anzuraten, vor allem auch wegen der Platzfrage an Bord. Unser Drachenschuppen ist vollkommen zweckmäßig, um nicht zu sagen vorbildlich, und man braucht also nur eine entsprechende Menge Holz

[148] 5 October [1907]. In the course of the kite and balloon deployments, we are gathering experience which would have to be applied at all costs on a possible South Polar expedition. The 100 gas bottles were an excellent choice. If we are to succeed in gathering usable balloon material for winter deployments as well, then that would perhaps be too few. Although taking a larger number can hardly be recommended, mostly due to the question of storage space on board.
