[037] jetzt ab wollen wir die gesamte Bagage auf einmal transportieren, statt der bisher nötigen umständlichen Doppelfahrt. Da heißt es überall das Gewicht so weit als möglich reduzieren. Von unserer persönlichen Ausrüstung bleibt alles, was sich als entbehrlich gezeigt hat, zurück, das bisher mitgeschleppte schwere Dach des Pferdestalls wird jetzt durch die Schlitten ersetzt werden müssen, und wir gehen von dem bisher gebrauchten reichlichen, aber schweren Überwinterungsproviant jetzt ausschließlich zu unserem Reiseproviant (im Wesentlichen Pemmikan) über, dessen knappes Maß sich in diesen Übergangstagen in recht unliebsamer Weise geltend macht. Trotzdem werden wir fast durchschnittlich fast 700 Pfund (außer dem Gewicht der Schlitten) auf unseren Schlitten haben müssen, und wir sind gespannt, ob unsere braven kleinen Pferde diese Last schleppen können – bergauf geht

[037] now on, we intend to transport all our luggage at once, instead of the inconvenience of two trips, as has so far been necessary. This means reducing the weight of our baggage as much as we can. We are leaving behind all the personal equipment we can part with, and the heavy roof of the horse stall will now have to be replaced by the sleds. We are going from our plentiful but heavy winter provisions to using travel provisions (mainly pemmikan) exclusively. The sparseness of these new portions has made itself felt most unpleasantly during the days of transition. Despite all this, we will still have to carry about 700 pounds (not including the weight of the sled itself), and are anxious to see if our dutiful little horses will be able to do it—at the moment they are still going uphill
