[139] greiflich große Menge, wenn man berücksichtigt, daß doch durch die 3 Hundereisen schon etwa 2700 kg drinnen sein müssen. Da muß schon vieles hineingeschafft sein, was zwar wünschenswert, aber nicht notwendig ist. Es muß also noch eine Hundeschlittenreise (Weiken, Loewe, 500 kg) und mindestens 2 Fahrten mit Propellerschlitten hinein, jede mit 1000 kg, gemacht werden, das ist das Minimalprogramm. Man braucht wohl die Hoffnung noch nicht aufzugeben, daß noch alles gut geht, aber die Gefahr, daß unsere Station Eismitte mißglückt, ist peinlich groß. Wir sind ja eigentlich fortwährend mit irgend etwas im Druck. Aber dies ist der stärkste und gefährlichste! – Ich hörte gestern von Weiken, daß jetzt 2 Grönländer tatsächlich Packpferde führen. So ist es, wenn auch, spät doch geglückt, Grönländer dazu heranzuziehen! – Ja, der August hat die Entscheidung betreffend der Transporte für die Randstation gebracht und sie ist wohl jetzt endgültig zu unseren Gunsten entschieden. Aber das Entscheidungsringen betreffend die Station Eismitte ist noch im Gange. Dieser Teil der Schlacht steht nicht gut, und so wird erst der September endgültig zeigen, ob die Expedition glückt oder nicht.

[139] if one considers that the 3 dog sled trips have already transported about 2,700 kg. There must be a lot of what has already been transported there which is, while desirable, not absolutely necessary. So we have to make one more dog sled trip (Weiken, Loewe, 500 kg) and at least 2 trips with the propeller sleds, each carrying 1,000 kg at the very least. I guess we can’t give up hope that everything will go well, but the chance that our Station Eismitte [“Central Ice Sheet Station”] will fail is embarrassingly large. We constantly seem to be under pressure to get something or the other done. But this is the most important and also most dangerous situation! – Yesterday, Weiken told me that 2 Greenlanders are now actually leading the horses! So we were successful (albeit late) in recruiting Greenlanders! – Yes, August brought with it a decision regarding the transports to the ridge station, and the ruling is apparently in our favor. But the decision-making process regarding the Station Eismitte is still ongoing. This part of the battle doesn’t look so great, and September will have the final say as to whether the expedition is a success or not.
