Copper mining and smelting at Mount Lyell, Tasmania

In 1893, the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company was formed in Tasmania. Between then and closure in 1994, it produced over a million tons of copper. Decades of copper extraction and smelting left the area around the mines in Mount Lyell barren. Sulphur released during mining operations destroyed vegetation and left several kilometers of eroded surfaces in its wake. The effects are still visible today.
