Eruption of Vesuvius

The 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius is one of the most fabled natural disasters in history. The eye-witness account of the Roman diplomat Pliny the Younger, as recorded by Tacitus, became a crucial source in Roman and environmental history. Today, Mount Vesuvius is the last active volcano on the European mainland.
