Erie Canal

In 1825, the Erie Canal became the first transportation system between the eastern seaboard and the western interior of the United States that did not require portage. Linking Lake Erie with the Hudson River, the 580-kilometer canal enabled, for the first time, the rapid transportation of people and goods between the Great Lakes and New York Harbor, facilitating westward expansion and industrialization in the United States.
