Expansion of African ivory trade

While elephant hunting caravans were mostly confined to Africa’s coastal areas until the mid-nineteenth century, the introduction of more powerful and accurate firearms led to a massive increase in elephant hunting. The ivory frontier moved deeper into the interior of the continent, as more and bigger hunting caravans went in search of the precious ivory tusks. This led to a dramatic decrease and endangerment of the elephant populations throughout the African continent.
