Drought in Sahel region, 1910–1915

The Sahel region is frequently hit by droughts. The drought that lasted from 1910 to 1915 affected both the Sahel region and the West African Sudan, and is still considered one of the worst droughts in this area in recorded history. It triggered severe famines with a high mortality rate among the population. While human mismanagement of the environment (in conjunction with colonial rule) worsened the situation, recurring climatic changes are the main cause of droughts in this region.
