Following the example of the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, sustainability became the central topic of the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA) congress of architects in 1993. Focusing on various approaches to sustainability in architecture, this congress was a milestone in the green building movement and paved the way for numerous sustainable projects and initiatives.
