Copernicus’s On the Revolutions of the Celestial Orbs

In his study De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Orbs), the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543) overcame the classic Ptolemaic model that assumed the planets moved around the Earth and instead introduced the idea of a heliocentric universe in which the planets, including Earth, revolve around the sun. The book was rejected by the Church and not published until his death in 1543.
