With the nationalization of Peruvian guano reserves (bird excrement valuable for the production of fertilizers and explosives), “the guano age” commenced. A period lasting forty years, it was sustained by the substantial revenues that the export of guano generated and the strong leadership of President Ramón Castilla (1797–1867).
