Audubon Society

The Audubon Society, the first bird protection organization in the United States, was founded in Boston in 1886. Named after French-American artist and naturalist John James Audubon (1785–1851), it became the first US-wide grassroots conservation organization whose primary concern was the protection of birds. In 1905 the National Association of Audubon Societies for the Protection of Wild Birds and Animals (now the National Audubon Society) was founded, and the society remains one of the most powerful environmental organizations in the United States.
