Released shortly before the twentieth anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, Gregor Schnitzler’s drama is about the breakdown of a nuclear power station in Germany. Die Wolke [The Cloud] is based on German novelist Gudrun Pausewang’s best-selling novel of the same name, which was written and published in the immediate aftermath of Chernobyl. The film’s plot hinges on the story of two teenage lovers, Hannah and Elmar, who must seek refuge in the wake of a nuclear accident at a plant near Frankfurt in which 38,000 people die and Hannah suffers radioactive contamination.
