[159] man bei den großen Schlittenreisen hin und zurück soll. Man sieht ja hier, wie es M.E. mit einem solchen Plane geht. Man kann jedenfalls nicht die ganze verfügbare Zeit ausnutzen, und die Hälfte der Schlittenreise ist ohne Resultat. - Dieser Plan wird eine herrliche Winterbeschäftigung für mich darstellen.

11. Oktober [1907]. Gestern und vorgestern Schneewetter bei Windstille. Gestern hatten wir einen Ballonaufstieg mit Reif, sonst aber ganz gut. Gleichzeitig nivellierte Koch. Am morgen hatten wir außerdem ein anderes Nivellement. Gestern abend habe ich begonnen, mir eine Art Sandalen aus Walrosshaut herzustellen. Heute hat nun Berthelsen auch Kochs isländischen Schuhe gefunden. Diese letzteren müßten auch für eine Südpolarexpedition sehr empfehlenswert sein, jedenfalls als Sommerfußzeug, vielleicht aber auch allgemein zur

At any rate one cannot use the entire time available, and half of the journey is without any result. — This plan will provide a wonderful winter occupation for me.

11 October [1907]. Yesterday and the day before, snow and no wind. Yesterday we carried out a balloon deployment with hoarfrost, otherwise fairly good though. Koch leveled at the same time. We also had another leveling during the morning. Yesterday evening, I began making myself a sort of sandal from walrus skin. Today Berthelsen also found Koch’s Icelandic shoes. These would also be highly recommended for a South Polar expedition, at least as summer footwear, perhaps also generally to
