Realizing Utopia? Reconstructing its Normative Potential

|

Historically the utopian-normative potential was not primarily concerned with articulating design goals for the human environment, but rather with answering the question: what makes a life good and fulfilled and under what conditions can this be achieved? At the same time, utopian projects are always reaching towards the actual lived practice that is implicit in their theory. A utopian narrative must be understood not so much as a concrete plan or set of policy recommendations, but as a call to decide for oneself about the plausibility and the desirability of the postulated ideals.
