Mei Xueqin and Jon Mathieu discuss Chinese mountains and the challenges they pose to the researcher. Mathieu included China in his recent book on the comparative history of mountains, yet regretted his lack of linguistic skills which prevented him from reading Chinese sources. Xueqin, an expert on industrialization, is well versed in the cultural tradition of these mountains and knows the regions first-hand. From their conversation a cross-cultural dialogue evolves.
