Johanna Mayer completed a master’s degree in theoretical and mathematical physics at LMU Munich. She is also a graduate from the Rachel Carson Center’s Environmental Certificate Program. After her master’s program, she has worked on a scientific publication at the chair for statistical and biological physics at LMU Munich. She recently started a new position as an intern for data science and research at the Green-Tech startup Planetly.

Carolin Pichl is currently completing the Rachel Carson Center´s Environmental Studies Certificate Program. Helena Held studies visual anthropology at LMU Munich and is always interested in the interface between anthropology and art. Therefore she presented her outcome of the research of her bachelor thesis in an exhibition. She made a film together with some fellow students about the wool production on the Shetland Islands and presented a short film at the Venice Bienniale. She studied at the Venice International University (VIU) and the University of Oslo (UiO), where she visited transdisciplinary courses and worked on environmental topics like food studies and ecofeminism.

Talitta Reitz is a graduate landscape architect and urbanist, and a certified heritage conservationist from University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Originally from Brazil, she has a background in architecture and urbanism from Federal University of Parana, Curitiba, where she worked for architecture offices and local and federal institutions for heritage conservation. In 2016, she was the recipient of the ASLA “Student Design Merit Award,” and of the Tau Sigma Delta Honor Society in Architecture and Allied Arts “Design Excellence” Medal. Currently, she is an early stage researcher of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie RECOMS Innovative Training Network and a PhD candidate of environmental humanities at the Rachel Carson Center at LMU Munich.

Humans, Animals, and Nature: Ideas of a Natural and Harmonious (Co-)Existence

In the nineteenth century, there was much debate about the question of which way of living could be regarded as “natural.” Caricatures on vegetarianism mock ideas of the “natural” relationship between animal and man, and draft utopian as well as dystopian visions of a vegetarian future.

Satirical Glimpses of the Cultural History of Vegetarianism

Vegetarianism as an alternative nutritional model is a controversial topic. Many contemporary arguments for and against a vegetarian way of life can be traced back to early discussions about vegetarianism in nineteenth-century media. This virtual exhibition sheds light on the first decades of the debate on meatless nutrition in German-speaking regions. In doing so, the exhibition adopts a special perspective: by examining vegetarianism as it is represented in caricatures, it is able to reconstruct the verbal and visual arguments used both in favor of as well as against the movement. The exhibition reflects upon the ambivalent public perception of vegetarianism at the time and, additionally, provides an amusing window into the wit and humor of the period.

Evi Zemanek is professor of Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Freiburg (ALU), where she has taught German literature and intermedia studies since 2010. She holds a PhD in comparative literature from LMU Munich. Her main research interests lie within the fields of media ecology, intermedia and intercultural studies, ecocriticism, and multimedia environmental journalism. She has published broadly on the aesthetics of nature in various media, ecotopias, eco poetry, and, more generally, on the history of ecological thought and the poetics of “ecological genres.” Most recently, she has published on “sustainable media cultures” and edited (with U. Kluwick) an interdisciplinary book on sustainability (Nachhaltigkeit interdisziplinär. Konzepte, Diskurse, Praktiken, 2019). She is currently finishing a book on caricatures, which investigates the entanglements of media history and environmental history since the nineteenth century. Evi Zemanek is founder of the DFG-Network Ethik und Ästhetik in literarischen Darstellungen ökologischer Transformationen, a member of the DFG-Network Politiken der Idylle, as well as of the Upper Rhine Cluster for Sustainability Research, and of the Transatlantic Humboldt Network Environmental Humanities.

Sophia Burgenmeister is currently writing her dissertation at the University of Freiburg (ALU), exploring the discourse and media history of meat consumption and vegetarianism. Her further research interests lie within the fields of climate communication, contemporary lyric poetry and intermediality. Her book Der “Blick auf Beowulf” – Eine Spurensuche zwischen Medialität und Materialität bei Thomas Kling und Ute Langanky (2018) focuses on the interplay of photography and lyric poetry. She has studied Philosophy and German Literature, Culture, and Media at the Universites of Freiburg and Nottingham and has worked as an editor for Philosophy, Literature, and Media Studies.
