Antarctic Treaty

Signed in 1959, the Antarctic Treaty on the protection of the entire Antarctic region south of sixty degrees latitude was the first international nature conservation treaty after the Second World War. States that signed the treaty vowed to preserve and protect Antarctica’s pristine land, water, glaciers, and oceans from human invention. With the treaty, Antarctica became the world’s largest protected area, with the signatory nations maintaining only research bases on the continent.
