Habitat II Conference

The Habitat II UN Conference on Human Settlements took place in Istanbul from 3-14 June 1996. Following the first United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (“Habitat”) in 1976, the Habitat II Conference—also known as “The Cities Summit”—concentrated for the first time on human settlements in the context of sustainable development. The two main focuses of the conference were the significance of adequate housing for all and special concepts for sustainable human settlement forms in urban areas.
