Imperial Forest Service in India

Administrators attributed the Orissa famine of 1865–1867, which killed nearly one million people, in part to deforestation in India. This provided some of the impetus required for the British administration to pass the Indian Forest Act, which regulated the management of forests as well as all Indian waterways and canals. The Act led to the establishment of the Imperial Forest Service in 1867, which remained responsible for forest management in India until the end of British rule.
