The term “sustainable,” first used by Hans Carl von Carlowitz, was adopted by the cameralist and forester Wilhelm Gottfried Moser (1729-1793). His two-volume work, Grundsätze der Forst-Oeconomie (Basic Principles of Forest Economy), was among the first publications to comprehensively address forest management.
