[018] Am nächsten Tag verschliefen wir die Zeit, weil der vorangehende Tag zu anstrengend war. Als wir endlich beim kalten Frühstück saßen, kam ein Bär, Thostrup lief hinaus, und ohne auf mich zu warten, schoß er zu frühzeitig, fehlte, und der Bär lief davon. Er kam noch einmal zu Schuß, und schoß ihn wohl an, aber wir bekamen den Bären doch nicht, und wir verloren mittlerweile so viel Zeit, daß es sich nicht mehr lohnte, heute weiter zu reisen. So benutzten wir die Mittagszeit zu einer Rekognoszierungstour nach S, die das Resultat hatte, daß wir beschlossen im N um Sabine-Insel herumzufahren. Der nächste Tag brachte diese Fahrt um Sabine-Insel herum. Den ersten Teil hatten wir Gegenwind, und ich verbrannte hier etwas die Nase. Dann mußte ich lange Zeit vorfahren, das Eis war minderwertig; es war zwar eben, aber bedeckt mit Schneewehen, die man bei diesem schwachen diffusen Tageslicht erst erkannte, wenn

[018] The next day, we slept in for a long time because the previous day had been so exhausting. When we had finally sat down to a cold breakfast, a bear came past, and Thostrup leapt up without waiting for me and shot too soon, missed, and the bear ran away. He managed to get another shot in, and seemed to hit his target, but the bear managed to escape, and by that stage we had lost so much time that it was not worth going any further that day. We used the midday light instead to make a reconnaissance trip to the south, which resulted in our decision to go around Sabine Island in the north. The next day consisted of this journey around Sabine Island. We had a headwind for the first segment and I got a slightly frostbitten nose. Then I had to lead the group for a long time, and the ice was of poor quality; it was actually flat, but covered with snowdrifts which one could only make out in this weak, diffuse daylight once
