[094] Gauß gesehene „hohe Land“ im W (Küste N-S) hindeutet, zu lösen. Diese Kurzsichtigkeit hinsichtlich des geografischen Problems ist mir unbegreiflich. Und gerade am Südpol muß das geografische das Hauptproblem sein, damit späteren Expeditionen die Arbeit so leicht wie möglich gemacht wird. Hier liegt aber die Sache so, daß später eine neue Expedition bis unmittelbar ab den Gaußberg heran arbeiten muß, um den Küstenverlauf festzulegen. Das war doch nicht nötig gewesen. Ich disputiere jetzt mit Koch öfter die Möglichkeit einer 5 jährigen Drift über den Nordpol und die einer Verfolgung der südpolaren Anden von Graham – nach Viktorialand. Wir kamen zu dem Schluß, das erstere ausführbar sei, mit Proviant für 7 Jahre, wenn den Mitgliedern nach Rückkehr eine auskömmliche Pension bezahlt wird. Aber schwierig muß es sein, die Leute so auszusuchen, daß sie nicht geisteskrank werden. Der Südpolarplan dagegen erscheint wegen der ungeheuren Entfernung fraglich. Aber wenn von beiden Seiten aus Proviant ausgelegt wird,

And especially at the South Pole, the geographic task should be the main focus so as to make life as easy as possible for future expeditions. Here though, a new expedition will have to work its way along from Mount Gauss onwards in order to chart the coastline. But it could have been different. I now frequently discuss with Koch the possibility of a 5-year drift across the North Pole and one which would follow the southern Andes near the pole from Graham Land to Victoria Land. We came to the conclusion that the former would be feasible, with provisions for 7 years, if the expedition members received sufficient pensions upon their return.
