Wir disputieren heute über das meteorlogische Problem des Inlandeises. Koch meinte, man würde die Jahresschichten nicht feststellen können, wenigstens nicht im eigentlichen Inneren, wo es keine Spalten mehr giebt. Ich glaube, daß die Windstille im Innern nur selten durch eine das Inlandeis überspringende Depression gestört wird. Schnee kann nur in der westlichen Hälfte in nennenswerten Mengen fallen. Hier müssen auch niedrige Wolken [Zeichenlinien] oder Stratus – vollkommen in E dagegen nur hohe Wolken. Die Randzone in E bekommt natürlich noch Niederschlag von der Schneedepressionen, die von S kommen. Ich will nun im Frühjahr sehen, daß ich karakteristische Wolkenfotografien, namentlich für die wolkenarme Inland Depressionen, etwas aufgenommen zur Zeit des barom. Minimums oder jedenfalls zu bestimmter Zeit, herstellen kann. Das giebt

[097] Lundager made some fortuitous wind observations showing that low temperatures are connected to the E wind and high temperatures to the W wind. Today, we are discussing the meteorological problem of the ice sheet. Koch said that it would not be possible to identify the yearly layers, at least not in the actual interior where there are no longer any cracks. I believe that the windless conditions in the interior are only rarely disturbed by the depressions which cross over the ice sheet. Snow can only fall in appreciable amounts in the western half. Here, there must also be low clouds [sketch lines] or stratus—all the way to the E, however, only high clouds. The peripheral zone in the E naturally experiences precipitation from the snow depression which comes from the S. In spring, I want to make sure that I take characteristic cloud photographs, particularly for the virtually cloudless inland depressions, perhaps taken at the time of the minimum barometer reading or at least at a specific point in time.
