[096] Seehundjagd, hätten aber beinahe Malheur gehabt, da sie auf einer Eisscholle hinaustreiben. Heute haben wir wieder eine Depression, aber nur mit dünnen Oberwolken, ohne Niederschlag und starkem Wind. Ich bin auf den Gedanken gekommen, da diese Depressionen, die im scharfen Contrast zu den Schneedepressionen stehen, über das Inlandeis kommen. Deshalb sind sie abgeflacht, haben keine Wolken, und sind überhaupt nahezu erschöpft. Vielleicht hat das offene Wasser im E die Depression über das Inlandeis herübergezogen. Ich muß diesen Unterschied zwischen den Depressionen weiter nachgehen. Das wäre ja ein wichtiges meteorologisches Resultat. Nach ganz unerklärt bleiben die Stürme, die ganz ohne Barometerfall vor sich gehen. Vielleicht giebt sich aber auch dafür noch mit der Zeit eine plausible Erklärung. Die letzten Tage haben reiches Material für Temperaturschwankungen gebracht. In einem besonders prägnanten Fall, der sich wohl zur Publikation eignen

I have begun to wonder whether these depressions, which contrast starkly with the snow depressions, come from across the ice sheet. This is why they are flattened out, have no clouds and are virtually exhausted. Perhaps the open water in the E drew the trough across the ice sheet. I must look further into this difference between the depressions. That would be an important meteorological result. What is still entirely unexplained are the storms which occur without any drop in the barometer. But perhaps a plausible explanation for that will present itself in time.
