[023] Arbeiten als ein Muster für einen Naturforscher der zugleich brauchbarer Schlittenreisender ist. So wäre es natürlich, wenn sowohl Koch als M.E. mich mithaben wollen, weil sie beide hoffen, auf diese Weise zu größeren Resultaten auf ihrer Reise zu kommen, und damit deren Wert zu steigern. Leider scheint es aber mit Hunden zu hapern. Ich muß jedenfalls erst hören, was M.E. sagt. Koch hat nur ganz kurz zu ihm über diesen Plan gesprochen, und er scheint einverstanden zu sein. Wer weiß aber, ob er nicht doch noch soweit vordringt, dass der kartografische Hauptpunkt, nämlich die Verfolgung des Peary-Kanals westwärts, hinfällig wird? Koch spricht auch von der Möglichkeit, statt nach Cap York nach Nord-Amerika zu gehen. Das wäre natürlich eine Bravour-Nummer ersten Ranges. Aber es ist ja auch eine Reise von 3 oder 4000 Km!

Unfortunately, there are not enough dogs. At any rate, I need to hear what M.E. thinks. Koch had only spoken briefly with him about this plan, and he seemed to agree. Who knows, however, if he won’t, ultimately, push so far forward that he loses sight of the expedition’s main cartographic goal, namely following the Peary Canal westwards? Koch has also mentioned the possibility of going to North America instead of Cape York. This would, of course, be brilliant. But it is also a 3[000] or 4000 km journey!
