[147] 4 solche gefährlichen Spalten waren zu kreuzen, an den einen sahen wir in der Spur des vorangefahrenen Schlittens schwarze Löcher. Wir atmeten auf, als wir wieder auf die weiche Schneefläche kamen. Es hätte leicht schief gehen können. Auf dem Rückweg haben wir für die 80 km nur 2 ½ Dunken Benzin gebraucht. Ab ½ 10 Uhr war es Nacht. Wegzeichen hätten wir da nicht mehr gesehen, doch glänzte die Schlittenspur gegen den hellen Abendhimmel.
Was nun? Jetzt ist die Katastrophe da. Es ist unmöglich, die zentrale Firnstation in der vorgesehenen Weise auszurüsten. Ich habe jetzt als vernünftige Aufgabe für die Propellerschlitten berechnet, daß sie einmal bis 400 km mit Nutzlast hineinfahren sollen. Dies wird bis Anfang, vielleicht Mitte Oktober dauern, und eine Riesenarbeit für die Beteiligten abgeben. Ob Schif die Schlußfahrt nach 400 km noch mit machen kann, ist sehr zweifelhaft. Aber was wird weiter? Kraus muß an der Weststation überwintern. Alles für die Überwinterung nicht unbedingt nötige muß für nächstes Jahr bleiben. Eine neue Hundeschlittenreise muß organisiert werden, die sofort aufbricht wenn Jülg mit seinen Schlitten zurück kommt. Und die Hundeschlittentruppe muß

This will probably take until early or mid-October, and will be a great deal of work for those involved. It is doubtful that Schif will be able to handle the last trip to 400 km. But what happens next? Kraus has to spend the winter at the western station. Anything not absolutely essential for the winter must be left for next year.
