[155] Abends. Wir haben heute die Nutzlast der Propellerschlitten (Haus und Petroleum) bis 50 km gefahren. Wundervolles Wetter, wundervolle Fahrt. Jeder Schlitten hatte außer der “Nutzlast” noch 3 Dunken Benzin. Eigentlich sollten diese bei 25 km abgestellt werden, weil wir dort noch viel Hausteile mitzunehmen haben. Aber wir ließen sie trotzdem in den Schlitten stehen, und siehe da, es ging. Freilich mußten wir mit großer Kunst die Anhöhen hinaufkreuzen und es wehte immerhin so, daß es trotz des Sonnenscheins teilweise fegte. Alles ging glatt, auch die Orientierung und so waren wir alle sehr befriedigt, daß es geglückt war, eine so große Last da hin zu bringen, wohin sie kommen sollte. Und dann der Rückweg war unbeschreiblich schön. Ja, die Propellerschlitten bezwingen die weiße Wüste! Man darf nur nicht mehr von ihnen verlangen, als sie leisen können- Geschwindigkeiten > 30 km/st. können nur ganz ausnahmsweise auf besonders ebener Bahn erreicht werden, ganz einfach, weil es zu sehr stuckert. [155] Evening. Today, we managed to carry the cargo load (house and petroleum) to 50 km on the propeller sleds. Wonderful weather, wonderful ride. Aside from the cargo load, each sled carried another 3 canisters of gasoline. We had intended to unload these at 25 km, since we had to pick up several pieces of the house there. But we left them on the sleds, and, to our surprise, it worked. Admittedly it took great skill to switchback up the incline, and the wind was blowing, so that despite the sun, there was some snow moving across the surface. Everything went smoothly, even the orientation, and we were very happy that we had succeeded in transporting such a heavy load to its intended destination. And then the way back was indescribably beautiful. Yes, the propeller sleds are conquering the white desert! One must not ask more of them than they can handle—speeds of > 30 km/hour can only be reached under exceptional circumstances, when there is especially even terrain, because the sleds vibrate too much otherwise. I’m very sorry that I must leave here soon, and leave this pleasure to Weiken.
