"World Conservation Strategy" report

In 1980, the “World Conservation Strategy” was published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) together with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and World Wildlife Fund (WWF, now “World Wide Fund for Nature”). The report argued that conservation and sustainable development go hand in hand. Its main principles included the following: that essential ecological processes and habitats must be protected, that genetic diversity must be maintained, and that any use of species and ecosystems must be done sustainably.
