[091] Es ist jetzt sicher, dass M.E. nicht vor Herbst zurückkommt, und die Unsicherheit über sein Schicksal lähmt sehr die Arbeiten der Expedition. Die Eisverhältnisse scheinen in diesem Jahr ungünstiger zu sein als im vorigen, man kann sich jedenfalls schwer denken, daß diese vollständig mit ungebrochenem Eis bedeckten Meeresarme in den 14 Tagen, die wir bis zum Jahrestage unserer Ankunft haben, eisfrei werden. Daher wird es kaum etwas werden mit den geplanten Sommerreisen nach Teufelskas und Sabine-Insel. Es sollte mir leid tun, wenn ich nicht dazu käme, am Germania-Hafen Farbenphotographien zu machen. Die Vegetation beginnt, herbstlich auszusehen. Der kurze Sommer wird bald zu Ende gehen.

[091] It is now certain that M.E. will not return before autumn, and the uncertainty surrounding his fate is crippling the work of the expedition. The ice conditions seem to be less favorable this year than they were last year, and in any case, it is difficult to imagine that these ocean estuaries completely covered with unbroken ice will be ice-free within the 14 days that we have left until the anniversary of our arrival. It is thus very unlikely that we will manage our planned summer trips to Teufelskas and Sabine Island. I would be sorry if I did not get the opportunity to take some color photographs at Germania Harbor. The vegetation is beginning to get an autumn look to it. The short summer will soon be over.
