[150] Der letzt geäußerte Südpolarplan erscheint mir je länger, je vorteilhafter im Vergleich zu dem ersten. Der Hauptfehler des ersten ist ja der, daß er sich über allzu viele Jahre erstreckt. Hier im Weddelmeere ist nichts andres nötig als eine zweimalige Überwinterung. Wahrscheinlich wird man schon ganz einfach dadurch ein gutes Resultat erreichen, daß man verhältnismäßig weit mit dem Schiff vordringt. Wenn man nur rechtzeitig ganz ins Eis geht, wird man eine erfolgreiche Küstenfahrt ausführen können, und die Möglichkeit haben, sich einen Winterhafen an schneefreiem Lande zu suchen. Man müßte im Osten einsetzen und an der ersten Stelle, wo man auf Land stößt, ein größeres Depot anlegen, vielleicht, wenn es der Umfang der Station gestattet, eine Station. [150] The longer I think about it, the more advantageous the most recently formulated South Polar plan seems to be compared to the first one. The main mistake of the first plan is that it stretches over too many years. Here in the Weddell Sea, no more than two winters are necessary. One can probably achieve good results very easily simply by penetrating relatively far forward with the ship. If one travels right into the ice early enough, it would be possible to travel successfully along the coast, and there would be an opportunity to find a winter harbor on land which is free of snow. One should begin in the east and lay out a depot at the first point at which land is reached, perhaps even a station, if the extent of the station allows for it.
