An der Steilwand des Eises photographierte Koch eine Reihe interessanter Schmelzformen, wobei ich meist den „Vordergrundslümmel“ spielen mußte. Mit unserem Suchen nach einem Aufstiegspunkte waren wir indessen nur mäßig vom Glück begünstigt. Lange Zeit fanden wir gar keinen, als wir endlich einen fanden und hinaufgingen, zeigte sich, daß dieser Teil bereits durch eine mächtige Spalte von der Hauptmasse getrennt war. Koch photographed a series of interesting melted shapes on the cliff walls, while I got to be the guy posing in front of them. Our search for ways onto the ice sheet was only partially successful. For a long time we found nothing, and when we finally found a path and went up it, it was clear that this part was separated from the main ice sheet by a massive crevasse. Finally we found a spot where we could use horses at a pinch, but not sleds to ascend.
