Centralia Mine Fire

The Centralia mine fire in Centralia, Pennsylvania is a massive underground fire that has been burning for more than 50 years. Beginning in 1962, it has since driven away all but ten (as of 2012) residents.

The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

When the oil tanker Exxon Valdez runs aground on 24 March 1989, it releases 41.6 million tons of crude oil along the coast of Alaska. The spill causes enormous damage to local ecosystems and wildlife.
