[013] Der Nächste Tag brachte dann eine herrlich schöne, nur sehr lange Reise. Wir kamen bis beinahe zur SW-Ecke von Shannon. M.E.’s Prinzip – und ich finde es ist sehr gut – ist: reisen nur unter günstiger Bedingung, nicht allzu lange Zeit, aber so hurtig wie möglich. Die eigentliche Pointe bei der Schlittenreise scheint die zu sein, die Hunde immer in Trab oder noch besser Galopp zu halten; sobald der Schnee so tief oder die Last so schwer wird, daß die Hunde im Schritt gehen müssen, so arbeitet man unökonomisch. Dies muß man also um jeden Preis zu verhindern suchen. In dieser Hinsicht arbeitet Koch ganz anders, und wie ich glaube weit weniger rationell. An diesem Abend auf Shannon spürten wir die Kälte weit mehr als früher, es waren aber auch die niedrigsten Temperaturen, die wir bisher gehabt haben. (-27 bis 28°). Am nächsten Tage (20.) gingen wir zuerst zusammen bis zur Ecke, hier trennten wir uns, indem wir Kurs auf die Pendelum-Straße, M.-E. auf das Depot in der SE-Ecke von Shannon nahm. Wir hatten nur keinen geübten Vorfahrer mehr, und man konnte gut merken, dass unsere

[013] The next day brought a wonderfully beautiful but very long journey. We traveled nearly as far as the SW corner of Shannon. M.E.’s principle—which I think is very good— is: travel only in good conditions, not for too long, but as briskly as possible. The real trick of sled travel seems to be to keep the dogs moving at a trot, or better still at a gallop; as soon as the snow becomes so deep or the load so heavy that the dogs can only move at a walking pace, it starts to become inefficient. One must thus attempt to avoid this at all costs. Koch works quite differently in this regard, and, I believe, much less rationally.
