[010] „raucht“, denn gegen den Wind zu reisen ist fast unmöglich. Wir wollten eigentlich gestern abend aufbrechen, aber das Schneetreiben – stets bei blauem Himmel – wurde stärker und entwickelte sich in der Nacht zu starkem Sturm. Jetzt Sonntag morgen hat es zwar etwas abgeflaut, aber noch immer sieht man hier und dort Partien in der Landschaft, wo der Schnee fließt, und auch am Zelt herrscht hin und wieder Schneetreiben. – Koch hat eben eine Breite und Länge ausgerechnet (gemessen mit dem Patent-Jakobsstab aus Vigfus-Instrumentenfabrik), wonach unsere Besteckrechnung recht gut paßt; auch die Höhe haben wir ausgerechnet: unser hiesiger Zeltplatz hat 1650 m und liegt also gerade doppelt so hoch wie die Spitze des Danmarks-Monuments.“

[010] begins to “smoke,” for it is nearly impossible to travel against the wind. We had actually intended to leave yesterday evening, but the snow flurries—always with blue skies—got stronger and developed into a heavy storm overnight. By today, Sunday morning, it has abated a little bit, but here and there one can see parts of the landscape where the snow is still streaming, and around our tent, too, there is blowing snow now and again. – Koch has calculated a width and length (measured with the patented Jacob’s staff from Vigfus’s instrument factory), according to which our calculation of our location is fairly accurate: we’ve also calculated the altitude. Our camp here is at 1,650 m, about twice as high as the summit of the Danmark Monument.
